SRM Tutorial Part 5: Configure NetApp SnapMirror

After we created the datastores for the ESXi hosts in the last part of this tutorial it´s now time to implement the replication to the secondary site.

SRM Tutorial Part 9: Advanced configuration & troubleshooting

In the previous part we created two datastores for VM data on both NetApp systems. By default the volumes get the status online during the creation. The first step now is to change the status on the secondary system to restrict. Otherwise it´s not possible to use this volumes as replication destination.

01_volume_status_restrict

Before we can create a SnapMirror connection it´s important to configure the remote access on each system. Select SnapMirror on the left and click on Remote Access.

remote_connection_snapmirror

You have the possibility to specify this for all volumes or for single volumes. In my lab I don´t need any restrictions here so I select All_volumes. Make sure to configure this on both NetApp Simulators.

After the remote access is configured you can click on Create.

02_create_snapmirror1

The wizard wants to know at first the SnapMirror role, you want to create. As we are on the primary system you need to select Source.

03_snapmirror_source

Afterwards select the volume you want to replicate.

04_select_path_snapmirror

You can select the destination system easily via drop-down menu, if it´s managed within the System Manager (what’s properly the case). If you saved the credentials there, they are also used here automatically.

05_destination_system_snapmirror

Due on fact we created the target volumes already in the last part on the secondary system you need to choose Select existing volume here. Otherwise it would be also possible to create the volume on the destination system here.

06_snappmirror_select_existing_volume

In the list you will find all volumes which have the status restrict. If you see an empty list here you skipped step 1 🙂

Next the wizard asks for the schedule. As I´m using a lab with limited resources I don´t want to run SnapMirror automatically and select On demand here. In a productive environment you will usually see a schedule implemented.

08_snapmirror_schedule

As I´m going to start the replication anyway manual I don´t need to limit the bandwidth. Select this setting based on your environment.

09_snapmirror_bandwidth

Repeat these steps for both VM data volumes. It´s not necessary to perform any task on the secondary system. Afterwards you will see both listed below the SnapMirror menu.

Comments

  1. Should the schedule that is shown during the creation part, be part of the existing snapmirror.conf or ?

  2. I have to enable the snapmirrow in the simulator by command, otherwise, the icon won’t show in GUI.
    options snapmirrow.enable on
    options snapmirrow.access legacy

  3. Also Java Runtime version may create problem when setup destination site.
    This post offers some insight.
