SRM Tutorial Part 3: SRM installation

In this post I will show a walkthroug of the VMware Site Recovery Manager 5.0 (SRM) installation.

SRM Tutorial Part 6: SRA installation
SRM Tutorial Part 7: Configuration #1
SRM Tutorial Part 8: Configuration #2
SRM Tutorial Part 9: Advanced configuration & troubleshooting

Before I begin I already installed two independent vCenter Server instances, each with a local MS SQL 2008 R2 Std. installation. Also I created the required SRM database on the same SQL instance. If you need help with the SQL part (installation and / or configuration) you should take a look at my posts: How to setup MS SQL 2008 R2 for VMware vCenter – Part 1 + How to setup MS SQL 2008 R2 for VMware vCenter – Part 2.

Due to the fact I´m just building a lab environment, I´m going to install SRM on the same system as vCenter is installed on. In a enterprise environment you will properly use a separate SRM server, but this I already mentioned in detail in last part.

After starting the setup you need to decide, if you want to install vSphere Replication (VR). In my lab I use two NetApp Simulator (with replication) as shared storage, so I don´t need vSphere Replication. I´m not going to show the vSphere Replication part, because in most enterprise implementations you will use storage array replication anyway.

1

Next you need to enter the information of the related vCenter installation. Like for most vSphere components it´s also important here that you having a working (and correct configured) DNS services.

2

If you don´t have the requirement to use official certificates you can automatically generate it in the next step.

3

…followed by some required information for the certificate.

4

Beside some information (site name, email-address) you are asked for the IP address of the local host. Here you need to select the network interface, which SRM is going to use. From a SRM perspective there is no requirement to have multiple interfaces, but your server is maybe connected to different networks by some other reasons (e.g. DMZ).

5

In the last step you need to enter the database information. Like already mentioned on the beginning: If you need help with the database and / or ODBC configuration check out this post.

6

After the installation finished successful the plug-in manager of the vSphere Client shows the available SRM plug-in, which you also need to install.

7

Afterwards you will find the SRM icon on your home screen!

8

That´s it! SRM is now installed on the first / primary site. Now you need to repeat the installation for the SRM instance on the secondary site.

Troubleshooting:

A common error message during the installation process is the Failed to create database tables one. If you see this message the database user configuration is not correct. Mostly the user is not set as database owner or have the wrong rights assigned.
