Running Windows 8 (Customer Preview) on vSphere 5

After this week Microsoft released the customer preview version of it´s new Windows 8, I tried to install it on VMware vSphere 5. There are some smaller steps you need to beaware of.

Note: First I tried the german version of Windows 8 (x64) and I wasn´t able to install it. Got a message (from Windows 8) that the DVD driver is missing and it wanted to have the driver on some way. After switching to the english version it worked directly like descripted below.

1. You need the latest version of vSphere 5 (Build 515841). If you are not running this build you will get an error message: “Your computer ran into a problem and needs to restart” durring booting from the ISO image.

2. If creating a new VM select Windows 7 or Windows 2008R2 as operating system.

3. Select E1000 as network adapter. VMXNET3 will not work.

3. Before starting the VM edit the following settings:

  • Enable 3D support if possible
  • Choose Windows 8 as operating system (Edit settings -> Options -> General Options)

4. Boot from the ISO image and you will be able to install / use Windows 8
